How Can I Miss You If You Never Go Away

Andy Davies,

2007

Commissioned by the Downtown Revitalization Steering Committee as part of the initiative to beautify and revitalize Galt Gardens. The work was to be located in a public, high-traffic, family-orientated location. It encourages interaction and community engagement, perhaps even be functional (eg. Kinetic, seating, etc.)

Davies’ three 22′ and one 3’ stainless steel flagpoles each present a recognizable element from everyday life: a chair, a mask, a dog and a whirl. The larger shapes are broken into smaller “flags” that each rotate independently. On windy days, the flags align to form the larger shapes. The title, “How Can I Miss You If You Never Go Away” is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the wind in Lethbridge.

The yellow dog form is the one fully interactive component of Davies’ installation and was created in the likeness of the artist’s dog, Delta. Believing strongly that art is to be touched and interacted with, Davies very consciously included an element that directly provided children (and adults) access to public art.
