Aeolian Aviary

Catherine Ross and Denton Frederickson,

2011

Aeolian Aviary is a sculptural sound installation. It combines the acoustic resonance of a wind and light sensitive string instrument with the dynamic emergence of a flock of cast aluminum birds. These birds, 67 in number, animate the gestures of flight from the streamlined postures of birds in rest, to wings fanned to capture air.

The City of Lethbridge invited artists to participate in a three stage public art competition. As the winning submission, Catherine Ross and Denton Frederickson received a commission to create and install a public artwork on site at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in conjunction with the grand re-opening of its renovated spaces.
